Despite all the controversy that surrounds him, Alejandro Valverde continues to win one week races like last year's Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré (left) and last month's Volta a Catalunya (right). He's back to defend his Dauphine title starting this weekend. Photos: Colin Flockton, steephill.tv.

Tour de Suisse is now on...

June 15 update: Day 8 is the final stage and after weathering the attacks from Cadel Evans and Levi Leipheimer yesterday, Alejandro Valverde should seal up the overall win today. But with the Cat 1 col du Granier (10k, avg 9%), Cat 1 col du Cucheron (8 km, avg 9%) and Cat 2 col de Porte (8k, avg 8%) in-store today, it will not be a formality. The final descent of the steep Col de Porte is where Bernard Hinault crashed heavily during the 1977 Tour de France. By the way, today's start town, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, was also passed through twice yesterday. It's been a scenic and entertaining race with lots of solo wins on finishing descents and we could have another one today. Thanks for tuning in. — Steve

June 14 update: Without a doubt, stage 6 is the longest, hardest stage of this year's Dauphine and features the only mountaintop finish. As we head south into the heart of the French Alps, three cat 3/4 climbs will get knocked off in the first 72k. At km 150, riders start the 6% col de la Croix-de-Fer that earns it's HC rating for being almost 30k long cresting at 2067m, the highest point of this year's race. The race then loops through the area again finishing up the cat 1 La Toussuire (18.5k, avg 6%). You may recall that La Toussuire was the stage 16 finish in the 2006 Tour de France... the stage in-which Michael Rasmussen soloed the final 170k and Floyd Landis blew up on La Toussuire () and lost his overall lead. The next day, that year, was Landis' stunning reversal of fortune that no one will forget for several reasons. — Steve

Stage 5 results: Yury Trofimov (Bouygues Telecom) wins Col de Joux-Plane and the scenic descent into Morzine; Levi gets dropped and loses more than a minute. Annemasse → Morzine, 125k (mountainous)

June 13 update: The profile for stage 5 looks very similar to yesterday's if you remove the 70k of rolling terrain from the start of stage 4. At just 125k, stage 5 is the shortest road stage of this year's Dauphine. Like yesterday, there is a big climb before descending to the finish, but today's decisive climb will be longer and steeper. The HC Col de Joux-Plane is 11.5k long with an average grade of 10% reaching a height of 1691m. There is a lot of serious climbing (5 Cat 1 and HC climbs) over the final three stages so expect lots of action as we head through the big mountains. Alejandro Valverde may be smiling now, but Levi Leipheimer won't be holding back in his quest to win one of his favourite races since we all know he'll be sitting on the sidelines next month.

According to the offical live ticker: "The famous col de Joux-Plane, often present on Tour de France's map, has been used 5 times by the Criterium du Dauphine Libere. The fastest man remains Marco Pantani who climbed the 12.5 km in 32'54", in 1997. Second is Richard Virenque in 2000 (34'16") and third Carlos Sastre in 2006 (36'00")" — Steve

Today's decisive cat 1 climb and descent overlooking Geneva, Switzerland:

Stage 4 preview: Vienne → Annemasse, 193k (med. mountain)

June 11 update: Stage 4 is the first of the mountain stages... a "medium" mountain stage. The riders will head northeast across the middle of the Rhône-Alpes region where not much will happen until km 120. The course then gets hilly/mountainous as the riders head towards the finish in Annemasse on the French/Swiss border on the outskirts of Geneva. Along the way, a cat 3, cat 4 and the cat 1, Le Salève (7k, avg 9.2%) get ticked off where we'll see the first big split in the race. From the summit to the finish is a 18k descent with a slight kick at the finish where Alejandro Valverde could snatch his third stage win of the week. — Steve

Stage 3 preview: St Paul-en-Jarez ITT, 31k (hilly and technical)

June 10 update: Stage 3 is a hilly, technical individual time trial (ITT) through the foothills of the Rhône Alpes that looks like a great opportunity for Levi Leipheimer to regain the Yellow Jersey. — Steve

Note:

Stay tuned... Steve

George Hincapie post-race: "I didn't know the final was so technical. It's hard for a team to control. I felt strong today and the team let me take my chance," said Hincapie after crossing the line. "Greipel was unlucky, he had to stop for a broken wheel" according to Hincapie... a puncture according to course radio. "I attacked in the last corner, bridged up to Sebastian Lang, had to sit and wait for a second to recover, but then I won easily," Hincapie said. "It was a little bit of luck, and I'm very happy. It was a good chance for me to take."

Stage 2 preview: Bourg-Saint-Andéol → Vienne, 184k (flat/hilly)

June 10 update: Today's stage starts out flat for the first 130k as the race follows the Rhône River, one of the major rivers of Europe, north from Bourg-Saint-Andéol to Vienne. Before the riders get to Vienne, they'll detour over two cat 4 climbs to add some excitement before they descend back to the Rhône River and the flat finish in Vienne. Will anyone sneak away on the two short climbs at the end? Probably not. Look for a field sprint and Hushovd to keep the Yellow Jersey for one more day. By the way, if you haven't noticed, I'ved added the finish profiles of the last three kilometers and the stage maps to the stage details table. The maps are part of a larger race bible pdf that takes about one minute to download from the official site's slow server. — Steve

Stage 1 has an uphill finish in Privas

June 9 update: Anybody notice the lack of crowds at the prologue in Avignon yesterday? I wonder how many people will show up for today's stage 1 start also in Avignon where, apparently, Palais des Papes is much more popular than a bike race. Over the last year, I've noticed that cycling's bad news has affected the crowd turnout in France more than any other country (with Spain and Germany close behind). That's one reason why ASO, who runs most of the major races in France except the Dauphine, is being so difficult with the UCI in asserting more control over the sport. Today's stage will be rolling as the riders head north in Provence for the uphill finish [profile] in Privas. — Steve

February 4th update: The official site hasn't released details about this June's Dauphine Libere, but the UCI has the host towns posted on their site (thanks to Colin F. for his email). This year's penultimate stage is likely stage 6, Morzine → La Toussuire. You may recall that La Toussuire was the stage 16 finish in the 2006 Tour de France... the stage in-which Michael Rasmussen soloed the final 170k and Floyd Landis blew up on the HC climb to La Toussuire () and lost his overall lead. The next day, that year, was Landis' stunning reversal of fortune that no one will forget for two reasons. But, before the action lights up in the mountains, stage 3 will feature a team time trial. More to come when the official site finally posts 2008 details. — Steve.
