August 26 post: Starting just east of Sevilla in Alcalá de Guadaíra less than 12 hours after stage 1 ended, stage 2 will head south across the hot Andalusian Plain and then gradually climb over the southwest end of the Sistema Penibético. There is one cat 3 at km 68 followed by 60 km of stepped climbing to the high point on the stage at 1050m where no KOM points will be awarded. The day will end with a 20 km descent to the southern coast and the flat finish in Marbella.

Marbella is the largest, coastal tourist destinaton in Southern Spain known as Costa del Sol ("Coast of the Sun"). This is a glitzy, party town with big yachts anchored off the crowded, but beautiful beaches. "Luxury tourism" is how Marbella calls it. The Vuelta last finished in Marbella in 1996 when Fabio Baldato won a sprint finish. The climbing on this stage isn't difficult either and the long descent should bring the race back together. — Steve
