A 3. szakasz ismét nyugati irányba vezet, az olasz riviéra városában Rapallo-ban lesz a hajrá, északra a Cinque Terre-től. 1999-ben, a 82. Giro 13. szakaszát a harcias francia Richard Virenque (Polti csapat) nyerte, a befutó négy kemény hegyi hágó után Rapallóban volt. Idén a 3. szakaszból az északi Apeninnek nagy emelkedői kimaradnak de van két minősített hegymenet egy 3. és egy 4-es kategóriás a szakasz második felében ahol sor kerülhet akciókra.

A rajt Reggio Emilia sík területén lesz, a mezőny megmássza a Passo del Bocco-t (szintmagasság: 950m) melynek a vége felé van néhány meredek szakasza mely talán (ideiglenesen?) szétzilálja majd a mezőnyt 40 km-rel a 173 km hosszúságú szakasz befutója előtt. Van még egy 4. kategóriás hegy is a célvonal előtti 10 km-en belül ahonnan stratégiailag érdemes egy döntő rohamot indítani a szakaszgyőzelemre valamint van egy kategórián kívüli emelkedő is 4 km-rel a cél előtt. Az utolsó kilométer enyhe lejtő. A szakasz ideges/izgalmas mezőnysprintre alkalmas a keskeny kanyargós utakon. -- Cselényi András és Zsuzsa
