"5. szakasz előtt.: A tavalyi Montalcino - i szakasz népszerűsége után biztos volt, hogy 2011 – ben a Giro visszatér Toscániába egy szakasz erejéig az utolsó 40km-en három dombos részen érintve a „strade bianchie” útvonalát. A „strade bianchie” – n lesz néhány igen kemény rész, 15%-os meredekkel és technikás lejmenetekkel. Habár a tavalyi 7. szakaszon rettenetes idő volt, a szerdai 5. szakaszra szép időt jósolnak.

 

A szakasz 191 km után az Umbria tartománybeli Orvietoban egy emelkedővel végződik. Orvieto egy ókori római dombtetőre épült, ősidők óta lakott település. 2,5 kilométerrel a vége előtt meg kell mászni egy 600m hosszú, átlagban 12%-os emelkedőt, az utolsó 500m szinte sík lesz. 2002-ben egyszer volt már itt befutó, akkor a Kelme – s spanyol Aitor Gonzalez Jimenez győzött 4 másodperccel egy 40 fős csoport előtt." -- Eberhardt Ferenc
