April 26 update: Stage 4 starts where it left off in Marmaris, once a fishing village now one of the largest resort locales in Turkey. We'll then head inland for a cat 1 climb and a rolling ride along a plateau for 130 km before descending to the finish in Pamukkale, a popular tourist destination known for its hot springs.

At the end of the stage, the course kicks up again with a 4.5% incline for the final 2 km. This could be the most interesting of the eight stages with some hilly scenery and one of the few none sprinter finishes. See the race summary table (r) for the stage profile, map and timetable. — Steve

2011 Tour of Turkey Race Preview

April 20 update: The Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey has only recently gained the attention of the cycling world which for many of it's previous 46 editions languished in obscurity. In 2008, it was upgraded from 2.2 to 2.1 status and now it's a 2.HC event. Last year, Giovanni Visconti won the event which gives you an idea of the type of rider this event is suited for. There is now a tradition of daily live video on Eurosport and this year we'll have daily big photos... so I present you with our first Tour of Turkey Live Dashboard. (In the past we've just posted links to highlights). I must say though, the
official site has one of the best race event sites on the entire calendar.

There are eight stages in this race starting on the Aegean Sea (west coast of Turkey) in Istanbul and then working south to Alanya on the Mediterranean Sea. The route is a mix of rolling and hilly stages but nothing too difficult. Other than stage 4 there are no uphill finishes and there are no time-trials. Stage 4 has a 5% incline for the final 2 km.

Also follow steephill on Twitter for the latest race info and video updates.
Six ProTour teams will take part: Omega Pharma-Lotto, Garmin-Cervélo, Lampre-ISD, Liquigas-Cannondale, Team Saxo Bank and Team Astana along with fourteen Pro Continental teams. And for the first time in Turkish cycling, two continental teams have been created in the country and both will be racing this year's event: Manisaspor and Konya Torku Seker-Vivelo. The Tour of Turkey runs Sunday to Sunday, April 24th to May 1st.

See the stage map and profiles right and scroll down for the list of teams. I did notice the distances on the profiles and timetables don't match up exactly. — Steve
