Race Previews

June 11 update: Like the ongoing and concurrent
Criterium du Dauphine, Tour de Suisse is considered a warm-up for next month's Tour de France. However, this year Tour de Suisse will have a much better field than the Dauphine. In fact, the startlist almost looks like a Tour de France startlist. Seems like the easier parcours compared to more mountains and time-trialing at Criterium du Dauphine is preferred by the riders.

While the Dauphine has two serious mountaintop finishes, the Tour de Suisse has none. There is only one true mountain stage at Tour de Suisse, but it's a good one featuring two HC climbs and a Category 1. From a time-trial standpoint, the Dauphine had 56km of time-trialing while the Tour de Suisse has 35km. The use of time bonuses at Tour de Suisse is another difference between the two races.

So where's the action going to happen at Tour de Suisse or is this the reason so many good sprinters have shown up. There will be some serious climbs outside of the one mountain stage namely the Simplon Pass on stage 2 and Col des Mosses on stage 3. Both are cat 1 climbs but they are scaled early on with plenty of flat ground for the race to come back together. Plain and simple, the Tour de Suisse is more known for twisty, lumpy roads that create opportunities for breaks. See the 'preview' links in the race summary table for a breakdown of each stage.

So who exactly is showing up? There are many Tour de France GC contenders just scan the official startlist and see for yourself... too many to list here. Also, see the links below for some interesting analysis. There is a great crop of sprinters including Mark Cavendish, Tom Boonen, Alessandro Petacchi, Thor Hushovd, Oscar Freire and Robbie McEwen. There are escape artists including Philippe Gilbert, Luis Leon Sanchez, Juan Antonio Flecha and Carlos Barado. With such a stacked field nearing peak physical condition for the Tour de France about to head out on the lumpy sometimes narrow Swiss roads of this year's course, it's really up to the riders to make this race. Those looking to make their Tour de France team selection will be eager to impress their directeur sportif. A stage win or high GC finish against such a high quality field will clinch a roster spot for any rider on the bubble.

One other thing, this will be an absolutely gorgeous course. — Steve

January 4 update: Added the 2010 stage maps to the race summary table (right). 2010 profiles to come. From a logistics standpoint it looks like a very good route as most of the finish hosts are start hosts the following day. The 2010 route is really an extensive tour of the German and Italian speaking parts of Switzerland; it starts in the very south, weaves west then north then to the far east before finishing at the top of the country. The old Romandie (French) area of the country (west third) isn't covered except for stage 3. A more detailed course preview to follow. — Steve
